Many people today believe that the internet and its fast, efficient means of communication that it brings is a very useful and positive tool in our world. Seth Godin and Clay Shirky seem to both have a similar philosophy of the internet being exactly that. Both Godin and Shirky are saying that the internet brings people together. They both believe that the internet is a very good thing, but they are not exactly saying the same thing in their speeches.
Some similarities in Godin and Shirky's speeches are that they both say that the use of the internet can really help in the world today. If it is used to bring a group of people together for a common goal, or to make news more up to date, the internet is a very useful tool. An aspect they both agree on is that global networking brings people together very fast and that without global networking, the world would be seperated and people would feel distant from each other. Both of the speakers try to persuade the audience to become part of the global connection and to use the internet to their advantage.
The speakers were not talking about the same positive aspect of the internet though. Seth Godin"s main point of his speech was for people to create tribes to come together and fight for what they believe in. Shirky talked about a different aspect of the internet. He said that the internet is making news more instant and fast. Shirky also says that the news is less and less reported by the local media or newscasters, but more coming from amatuers that are at the news site and they then post it on the internet. While Godin said that the internet can be used to creat tribes which creates movements, Shirky says that the internet is very helpful for news and media. They do both believe that the internet and global networking is useful and a positive tool in today's world.
